Necessary Repairs
“What are you up to?” Jack asked curiously, emerging from his quarters and finding Ianto curled up on the sofa, with the lights on brightly, Jack’s coat spread across his knees and thread dangling from his lips.
He mumbled something incomprehensible by way of reply, and Jack moved over to take the thread from his mouth so he could answer properly. Ianto shot him a quick, amused look.
“If you must know,” he said dryly, “I’m fixing your coat. You will get stabbed when you’re wearing it.”
“You’d rather I got stabbed without it?” Jack asked curiously, and Ianto nodded, taking back the thread and sucking the end briefly before easing it through the eye of the needle he was using. He paid no attention to Jack’s stare.
“Your shirts,” he said eventually, carefully securing the thread at one end of the next rip, “are easily replaced. This isn’t. If you could bear that in mind, it would be very helpful.”
Jack watched him sew for a few seconds, doing his best to tell himself he wasn’t staring at Ianto’s hands, then said, “I thought you took it to a tailor’s for repairs?”
“I used to,” Ianto told him, between stitches, “but I ran out of excuses. And they told me that since this thing is more repair than coat these days, there’s very little point to them patching it up one day and having it ripped apart the next.”
“I’m not that bad,” Jack protested vaguely, still staring.
“You’d be surprised,” Ianto said, quirking one eyebrow briefly.
Jack sat down beside him, and watched him finish sewing the rip closed. He held the thread in his mouth again, needle dangling, and turned the coat over to check his work. Jack leaned closer to have a better look.
“I can’t even see where it is,” he said in surprise, and Ianto handed him the coat, then packed away his needle and thread while Jack hunted for the repair.
“How,” Jack said incredulously, “did I ever manage without you?”
“You didn’t,” Ianto told him, straight-faced, and Jack stood up, shaking out the coat and grinning.
“Must have been my secret weapon.”
Ianto folded his arms and sat back, eyebrow raised. Jack gave him a few moments to make the expected joke, but he shook his head, smiling slightly.
“What secret weapon?” he asked instead, and Jack winked.
“I have a spare coat.”
Later, when Ianto had stopped trying to murder him for wasting so much of his time and energy and had simply, with smouldering fury, put him on instant for the next month or so, Jack decided that it was still worth it.
Just for the look on his face.
