Careless
“What happened to you?”
Tosh looked round at Gwen’s startled exclamation, then stopped and stared when she saw Jack entering the Hub, trailing a rather despondent looking Ianto.
At least, she assumed his expression was despondent – it was quite difficult to tell underneath the short fur he’d sprouted, apparently all over his body, judging by his face and hands.
And Jack was no less furry.
“Bloody hell,” Owen said when he saw the two of them, and Ianto shot a very definite glare at Jack’s back.
Jack ignored them all and went to hang his coat up in his office.
“What happened, Ianto?” Tosh asked, managing to sound desperately concerned despite the nigh-on overwhelming urge to cackle hysterically.
Ianto’s shoulders slumped, he sighed, and he turned to look at the three of them.
“You remember that device we found yesterday?” he said flatly, glancing from one to another.
“He said it was harmless,” Owen pointed out, jerking a thumb towards Jack’s office.
Ianto put his hands on his hips and sighed again, ruffling the fur on his face.
“Yes, and he said that right before it hit him with an energy blast, if you remember? And I know he was fine when you checked him out, but this turned up less than six hours later, and there’s nothing else it could have come from.”
“What about you?” asked Gwen, edging closer and cautiously reaching out towards his fur-covered hand. “You weren’t caught in the blast.”
Tosh could have sworn she saw a slight movement in among the fur that just about correlated to Ianto raising an eyebrow, and he told them all calmly, “It’s infectious.”
Gwen leapt back instantly, while Tosh and Owen more discreetly pushed their chairs away from him. The fur around his mouth moved, and Tosh guessed he was smirking.
“I wouldn’t worry,” he told them. “Jack says it’ll wear off by the end of the day. And I doubt any of you will catch it.”
“Why not?” Gwen said cautiously, and Ianto raised his eyebrow again.
“It requires a certain amount of contact with an infected party before it can be passed on.”
In the second’s pause while they all digested that, he swept on through to Jack’s office – and closed the door and the blinds after him.
Owen grinned, and turned to look at the girls.
“And that, kids, is why we always use protection.”
