Guided Tour

“There,” Jack said at last, taking his hands away from the headset and stepping back. “You’re all set up to receive and interact. I’ve loaded the world building program already. Want to try it?”

Ianto looked down at the little glowing discs stuck to his wrists, then raised a hand cautiously to the thin circlet on his head, lingering at the matching discs over his temples.

“Are you sure this is safe?”

“Positive,” Jack told him firmly. “This thing’s even designed for humans.”

“That makes a nice change,” Ianto muttered, and Jack stepped forward again, putting his hands on Ianto’s shoulders.

“I promise you, this is safe,” he said earnestly. “Do you really think I’d risk you?”

Ianto smiled slightly, and admitted, “No. Okay. Do whatever you have to do.”

Jack closed his eyes.

The discs on his circlet (which matched Ianto’s) glowed brighter, then went green as the little room faded away around them, and trees – huge, impossibly tall trees – filled the area. They stretched as far as Ianto could see, with ferns brushing around the gigantic trunks. He looked up, squinting, but couldn’t quite make out the individual treetops.

“You like it?” Jack asked, opening his eyes and stepping back, and Ianto shot him a distracted smile, looking around again.

“How far can we go?”

“As far as we like,” Jack told him. “No matter how far we walk we won’t hit the walls. The VR shifts around us as we move, you see, and the whole room’s been configured to respond to…”

He paused, looking at Ianto’s raised eyebrow, and said sheepishly, “Far as we like. Yeah.”

“And at what point do the Ewoks appear?” Ianto asked, eyeing the trees.

Jack blinked at him, then said, “I lived on this planet for three years. There’s nothing like that here.”

“Joking,” Ianto assured him softly, and reached out to take his hand. “What about this?”

“What about what?” Jack asked.

“I know the trees aren’t real,” Ianto said, “so if I touch them it’s a manufactured sensation. What about you, though? You’re really in here with me. So if I touch you, am I touching you in reality?”

“Yes,” Jack said simply.

“So if I, for example, did this,” Ianto said, gently pulling Jack to him and running a hand up his arm, “anyone who walked in would see it?”

“Mm,” Jack agreed thoughtfully. “So I guess it’s a good thing I locked the door.”

Ianto smiled, and laced their hands together, saying, “Good. Then you can show me round undisturbed.”

Jack grinned at him, and started walking.
