Sleeping Patterns
Back before, it used to be like this: when Ianto sleeps, he sleeps sprawled out across the bed, on his stomach. He has his arms up, one claiming the pillow, his other hand resting just before his lips, catching the breath from his open mouth. He doesn’t move much once he’s got comfortable, unless he’s dreaming those twisted, dark dreams that come his way every now and again (more, not less, since Jack got back). Most of the time, anyway.
Recently he’s changed a little. Jack spent a lot of time going over every moment they had together while he was on the Valiant, so he notices, the first time he ends up back in Ianto’s bed.
Ianto fell asleep as per usual, curled up with Jack’s arm around his waist and one hand tucked under his head. For a while Jack was content to stay right there, relishing real human contact again, but the minutes rolled by and Ianto rolled over. His arms wormed around Jack, legs winding with his, and he burrowed into Jack’s embrace before settling down again.
Jack had spent a few moments almost frozen. This close, this tight, was too much, but Ianto refused to let go of him, and when he’d tried to gently peel his arms away Ianto had tightened his grip, frowning in his sleep and making an unhappy little noise.
After that Jack hadn’t had the heart to move him.
And that’s how it is now. When Ianto sleeps, he sleeps with one hand holding onto Jack, at the very least. And his grip is tight.
Jack grips back and says nothing, not when Ianto’s asleep, not when they’re both awake, not even when Ianto’s just out of earshot and Jack can pretend he’s speaking to him without having to deal with the consequences. He just holds Ianto’s hand as he sleeps and thinks it at him, watching the nightmares fade and wondering if somehow he got through.
I’m not going anywhere without you.

Date: 2008-05-15 01:00 am (UTC)Isn't it brill? Have you seen Samurai Champloo (made by the same folks as Bebop). CB is what I had hoped Firefly would be. Sadly, it didn't deliver, though was good in its own way.

Date: 2008-05-17 05:45 pm (UTC)I've been reading through your fic and all I can say is I love them. But I'm thinking this might be my favourite. It's just so good. This is why I tell my sis short fics can be just a good as long ones. Believeable angst set off very nicely with fluff. Read it during a break from studying and the smile on my face with that last line was just huge. Yeah I think you've guessed I like it.
