Summary: The Hub's gone into Lockdown, but for some reason Tosh and Ianto aren't too willing to tell Jack why...
Prompt: For the [livejournal.com profile] writerinadrawer Challenge 1.09 - Lockdown

Conspiracy

The lights went out.

“Tosh?” Jack asked from his office doorway, waiting for the backup lighting to come on.

“I don’t think that was me,” Tosh said, and Jack sighed.

“Then why are we standing around in the darkness?”

There was silence. Jack stared out into the Hub, trying to catch even a glimmer of light. Nothing. He gave it a few more seconds, then said, “Still waiting for answers here.”

“I’ll go take a look at the generator,” said Tosh, and Jack listened to her rustle around at her desk before a beam of torchlight clicked into existence. She turned the torch on him, the light dazzling his eyes.

Wincing, Jack raised his hand to block the beam and said, “I’ll come with you. Just in case.”

“I’ll be fine,” Tosh said quickly. “You should stay up here and keep an eye on things.”

Before he had a chance to protest, the light left his eyes and Tosh headed downstairs.

Carefully, Jack felt his way back to his chair, and sat down. He dug out his own torch from one desk drawer, and waited.

A couple of minutes passed before the lights powered back up. Smiling, Jack turned off his torch and put it away again, heading back out into the Hub as the cog door rolled back and Ianto returned with lunch.

“Tosh told me what happened,” he told Jack, gesturing to his comm as he handed over the bag and turned away again. “I’ll go give her a hand.”

“With what?” Jack asked. “Power’s back on.”

Ianto glanced back at him, and hesitated.

“Something wrong?” Jack said, raising his eyebrows and clasping his arms around himself.

“You don’t want to know,” Ianto told him.

Jack stared at him. “Let’s pretend I do.”

“How honest do you want me to be?” Ianto asked slowly.

“Perfectly.”

“Then you really don’t want to know.”

“Oh, I think –”

There was a faint scrabble from Jack’s office, and he stopped. Ianto grimaced, and raised his hand to his comm.

“Tosh, they’ve made it up here. We’re going to have to go to plan B.”

“Ianto,” Jack said warningly, and Ianto winced.

“Something chewed through the cables on the generator,” he said slowly. “Tosh has fixed it, but we still need to catch the creatures. You might want to leave the Hub while we deal with it.”

Jack frowned. “I can help. I’ll get Gwen and Owen to come straight back. They can deal with the police later, but if we’ve got a breach of Hub security…”

He trailed off at the look on Ianto’s face.

“What are you not telling me?”

Ianto hesitated again, then said, “Well. You remember those spidermice?”

Jack went very still indeed.

“You mean the spidermice I specifically said we were never having within the Hub ever again?”

“Those are the ones, yes,” Ianto said, with an overly bright smile.

“I seem to remember Tosh giving UNIT fifty reasons we couldn’t have them.”

Ianto put his hands on his hips and avoided Jack’s gaze, saying, “UNIT sort of sent them anyway.”

“And of course you sent them back, as per my orders,” Jack said, fists clenching as he forced a lighthearted tone.

“Not exactly,” Ianto admitted. “We kept them in the lower archives out of sight, but they appear to have escaped.”

There was another faint scuttling sound from Jack’s office.

“Okay,” Jack said cheerfully, making a break for the invisible lift, “put the Hub back in lockdown. I’ll head Owen and Gwen off. I’m sure you can deal with this.”

“Yes sir,” said Ianto, smiling.

where do I find the out-takes for season 1? I know they're supposed to be on the disc but can I find them? Can I buggery. Can I find my discs themselves???? Nope. (this is clearly the universe punishing me for watching the discs I bought for other-half's birthday before he's watched them!

Outtakes are on the episode 12/13 disc, in the special features section.

The deleted scene from episode 7 that this fic refers to, which is what I actually meant but was too stupid to type correctly (duh me...), is in the deleted scenes in the special features section on the episodes 8/9 disc...

:)

What you need is a wrist computer to find those discs... Wouldn't be a problem then. ;)

... I don't want to think about what they'd look like. I really, really don't. *is not particularly afraid of mice, but gets goosebumps from spiders, and even moreso from the idea of mice-sized ones*

Jack's such a coward - not that I blame him, all things considered (most notably that the fault is something he handed out orders against, which is something Jack seems to be pretty big on [orders, that is]).

A fun, I-could-picture-this-happening read.

Oh, I know the feeling! I really rather dislike spiders, so I'm not even going to head towards description. I prefer to think that they're more mouse-like than spider-like...

I'm really glad you could see it working. Thank you very kindly. :)

That's what you're meant to think. ;) There's a deleted scene from Greeks Bearing Gifts where Jack mentions how much he hates those spidery mouse things... :)

Glad you liked! Thank kindly. ^_^
