Jack stepped back, gun raised, and slammed a kick into the door, snapping it around the lock and sending it flying open. It cracked again as it hit the inside wall, hinges buckling.
Jack bounded forward instantly, checking for threats and then moving aside to let Gwen and Ianto follow him in.
“Any sign, Owen?” he asked, raising one hand to his earpiece, but Owen, watching the fire escape with Tosh in the street below, responded with a quick negative. Gwen wasn’t really surprised – this alien had been making it look embarrassingly easy to avoide capture for the past three weeks, always at least one step ahead of them. They’d yet to figure out how it was making its escapes, and the frustration was beginning to get to them all.
At Jack’s signal, she and Ianto started forward into the flat, proceeding with caution to the kitchen and bathroom as Jack went bursting into the bedroom.
Gwen pulled open the cupboards and drawers in the kitchen, quickly ascertaining that there was nothing hiding in there or the fridge, though there was a hot cup of coffee on the worktop. Beyond that there were no obvious clues, so she went through to the bathroom to see how Ianto was getting on.
“Found anything interesting?” she asked, as he closed the medicine cabinet above the sink. He glanced back at her.
“Nothing yet. You?”
Gwen shook her head, wandering over to the sink and examining the toothbrush holder as she said, “There’s never anything. I don’t even know why we’re surprised any more.”
“Don’t forget the energy signal,” Ianto reminded her, sweeping back the shower curtain to inspect the bath.
“But we don’t know what it’s for,” Gwen said, frowning at herself in the mirror. “It keeps turning up whenever we get close and we never even find a device that might be causing it. It’s driving me mad.”
Ianto shot her a quick smile, then returned to going through the bath products stacked at the end of the tub, telling her, “Tosh will figure it out soon. She’s close to a jamming signal as it is.”
With a sigh, Gwen opened the medicine cabinet and poked through for herself.
“I know,” she said wearily, “but it doesn’t normally take this long, and –”
There was a fierce crackle over the comms, and Gwen yelped, snatching her earpiece off for a moment. She put it back on as soon as the crackle had gone, and caught the tail end of Tosh asking frantically, “– going on in there? We’ve got an energy spike on the scanners, is everyone alright?”
“I’m fine,” Gwen said quickly, shutting the medicine cabinet and seeing Ianto also putting his comm back on in the reflection. She turned, asking, “Ianto, you alright?”
The bathroom was empty.
Gwen span to look back in the mirror. Ianto was there, looking up at her with an expression of pure horror. He raised his hand to his earpiece, lips moving, but she couldn’t hear anything.
“Jack!” Gwen shouted. “Jack! Ianto’s gone!”

The burst of static caught Ianto by surprise. In his hurry to get his headset off he dropped the bottle of liquid soap he’d just picked up, which in turn knocked the various bottles of shampoo, conditioner and similar products into the bath. It took him a few moments to pick them back up, and then he straightened and put his earpiece back on gingerly.
“Gwen,” he said, turning, “are you –”
The bathroom was empty.
Ianto paused for a second, staring at the mirror. Gwen was reflected there, as if she was still standing in front of the sink. She stared back at him, eyes wide.
Swiftly, Ianto raised his hand to his headset, saying, “Something’s happened to Gwen. Tosh, did you pick up anything on the scanners?”
“There was a big energy spike a moment ago,” Tosh told him instantly. “I was trying to get in touch with you but it interfered with the comms. It’s the same energy we keep picking up whenever he gets away from us.”
Ianto said nothing for a moment, watching Gwen edge closer to panic, clearly shouting now.
“Jack!” he called. “Gwen’s been taken by something. She’s on the wrong side of the mirror!”
He heard the bedroom door bang and then Jack came dashing in, halting abruptly when he saw the state of affairs.
In the mirror, Gwen, who’d been looking out at her door, abruptly looked back at them, and froze, eyes darting between Ianto and Jack. Her lips moved a little, but Ianto couldn’t quite make out what she was saying.
“This has to be how he’s been escaping from us,” Ianto told Jack quickly. “But I don’t know what activated it or why it only took Gwen rather than both of us.”
“I didn’t find anything useful in the bedroom,” Jack said, skipping the obvious innuendo as he shook his head and tapped his earpiece. “Tosh, we’re gonna need you up here.”
“On my way,” Tosh told them quickly.
Ianto moved a little closer to the mirror, saying, “Gwen was just here when it happened. I was by the bath, so I didn’t see the change, and the static on the comms distracted me.”
“Okay,” Jack began. “Don’t touch anything else until Tosh gets here. Last thing we want is for this to get any worse.”
“Jack,” Ianto said flatly, and he stopped.
In the mirror, behind their reflections, another Jack had just walked into the room. Gwen was gesturing desperately between them all as he turned to stare at them.
“Shit.”
Ianto found he couldn’t help but agree with Jack’s appraisal of the situation.
“So much for this not getting worse,” he said softly.
