Got What You Were Looking For?
“Tosh?”
Tosh looks up quickly, almost guiltily, but then smiles when she sees it’s Ianto. She puts the coat she was looking at back on its hanger, and says, “Hi. What are you doing here?”
Ianto takes a moment to survey the busy shop.
“I’m trying to buy a birthday present,” he says, “but now I’m here I think I’m probably looking in the wrong place.”
“I know what you mean,” Tosh tells him, glancing back at the coats.
“What are you looking for?” asks Ianto, and plucks at the sleeve of a plum-coloured jacket hanging on one of the racks beside him. “New coat? This would suit you.”
Tosh pushes her hair back behind her ears and smiles at him.
“It’s too short,” she says.
At that Ianto raises both eyebrows, and she does her best not to blush. When he doesn’t look away she sighs, laughing slightly.
“I see,” Ianto says gravely. “What we have here is a classic case of coat envy. Very serious matter.”
“It’s the way it billows,” Tosh confides. “He does it deliberately, you know.”
“Oh, yes,” Ianto agrees, looking through some of the other coats on sale. He pauses at a few but then dismisses them, continuing down the rack as he adds, “It gets to us all sooner or later. Here. Try this one.”
The coat he takes down is black leather, and reaches just about to Toshiko’s knees when she tries it on. Ianto takes her shoulders and guides her to the mirror on the side of one of the columns nearby, and she examines the coat for a few moments.
“It won’t billow too much,” Ianto says apologetically, but Tosh smiles at him.
“No, it’s great. He can keep his billow. I like this.”
Ianto pats her shoulder and says, “Good. And I won’t tell any of the others you snapped under the pressure.”
Laughing, Tosh says, “Thanks. I suppose it would be a bit embarrassing.”
Ianto considers that, then tells her, “And I bet you’d last another three months. If the others find out you’ll cost me a small fortune.”
“Our secret,” Tosh promises, and Ianto smiles, and leaves her to her shopping.
