Fandom: Torchwood
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 400
Summary: Jack, Martha, TARDIS coral and alien Miracle Gro. Sounds like a plan...
Prompt: Jack/Martha Staying Behind Ficathon - Prompt: Martha and Jack grow their own mini Tardis from the "sapling" on his desk
Grow Your Own TARDIS
Martha threw the thermos flask up in the air and caught it, saying, “You’re sure this will work?”
“Positive,” Jack assured her cheerfully, with the confidence she’d come to realise meant he wasn’t sure at all, but was going to try that alien device out anyway and let someone else clear up the mess later.
Still, it was usually interesting to watch the results, so when he held out his hand decisively, she slapped the thermos into his palm and only took one step back when he moved the coral onto the floor and proceeded to tip the contents of the flask over it.
For a few moments, nothing happened, and Jack was well on his way to pouting for Britain, looking back into the empty thermos and muttering, “That should have worked…” when the coral suddenly fell off its stand and started growing at a rate of knots.
“That’s more like it,” Jack grinned, giving the coral room and stepping back beside Martha.
The coral twisted and shivered as it grew, and then started changing shape, flattening out and turning silver. It gained corners and sides, and took on a decidedly rectangular shape, expanding into at least three dimensions. When it finally stopped, taller than both of them and sporting silver handles on its doors, Jack and Martha both blinked at it.
“Office camouflage?” Martha said dubiously, and Jack raised his eyebrows.
“Apparently. What do you call these things, anyway? Filing cabinet?”
Martha put her hands on her hips and looked their newborn TARDIS up and down. “Stationery cupboard?”
“Whatever,” Jack shrugged, and grinned at her, saying, “Who needs the Doctor, eh?”
Martha pulled a face, and gestured for him to go first.
“You grew it,” she pointed out, and Jack, still grinning, strode forward and pulled open the door.
There was a pause, and then Jack glanced back at Martha briefly, aware of her supremely unimpressed expression. He turned back to the empty cupboard, frowning, then climbed in and looked around at the back of the other door, out of Martha’s sight.
“A-ha!” he crowed, ducking behind the second door, then leant back to grin at Martha, who promptly scrambled in after him, saying, “You’re kidding me! That never worked!”
Jack was quick to reach out past her and pull the door to, saying, “TARDIS didn’t work, no, but I’d say the cupboard itself wasn’t a complete loss…”
