Dates and Deliveries
Jack vanished on the eighth of February, a Friday. Before the weekend was over, Gwen had posters up all around Cardiff. There was even one in the tourist information office.
Ianto spent a lot of time staring at it, wondering whether he had the courage to tear it down.
~*~
At ten o’clock on the morning of the ninth, Ianto was at home. The doorbell rang, but when he answered it there was no-one there. Just a rose on the doormat, with a small card beside it. He picked both up and went back inside after a few moments.
The card in the envelope was blank.
Ianto found a vase in a cupboard, cleaned it, and set the rose in it. It looked strange on its own, but he put the vase in the middle of his dining table, and frowned at it for a while until he stirred himself to go out for a walk.
~*~
On the tenth, at ten o’clock, the doorbell went again. Ianto was quicker to get there this time, but again found nothing except another rose and another blank message card. He put the rose in the vase, and the card on his bedside table, and tried not to pay too much attention to the mystery.
~*~
On the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth, a girl delivered the roses and blank cards to the tourist information office. Ianto asked her who’d placed the order, but she shrugged. He asked her when this mystery person had placed the order, but she couldn’t say. She told him that the florist she worked for took orders up to a month in advance, and Ianto, sighing, let the matter drop.
He kept each rose in another vase at the Hub for the day it had been delivered, but took them all home with him in the evening. Five roses on his dining table, five blank cards beside his bed, and he was none the wiser.
~*~
On the morning of the fourteenth, Tosh came in early. She gave Ianto a strangely nervous smile, and darted downstairs without saying a word, clutching her bag protectively. He didn’t think twice about it.
Owen turned up exactly on time, nodding to Ianto as he passed and then heading downstairs. He was coping well with Jack’s absence – he was working hard and ignoring the fact that Jack wasn’t there, as if that could help him forget all the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
It was a long time before Gwen arrived. She was practically walking on air, grinning smugly and wearing unusually dressy clothing. She stopped for a brief chat with Ianto, telling him how Rhys had made her breakfast in bed and gone out of his way to make Valentine’s Day special for her. Ianto nodded and smiled, remembering that she’d come in with a similar story on St Dwynwen's Day. But that made him remember how Jack had grinned at him when he’d found the first of half a dozen presents hidden around the Hub, where the others never had occasion to go. And remembering that hurt.
When Gwen had gone skipping downstairs to tell Tosh everything, Ianto checked the time. Half past ten.
Sighing heavily, he went to make coffee for everyone.
They all looked happy. Owen even thanked him for the drink, tipping Tosh a wink and asking her if she preferred red wine or white, and Tosh, smiling broadly, explained that they were going out for a meal tonight. Gwen, Ianto noticed, was being generous enough to congratulate her via Instant Messages, and didn’t look particularly put-out in reality. But then she’d already said something to Ianto about Rhys having plans for the evening, so she couldn’t complain.
Ianto smiled at them all and wished them a happy Valentine’s Day, then retreated back upstairs, smile vanishing the moment he’d turned away.
~*~
At eleven o’clock, the buzzer went, and Ianto opened the door before the girl had even had a chance to tell him she was from the florist. Again.
She smiled at him, gave him the rose and the card, and went away.
With the rose in water, Ianto opened the card. The envelope was blank, just like the all the others, but the card was a different design. The previous five had had a picture of a rose on – this one was a stylised, simplistic heart-shape, coloured deep crimson.
And there was a message on the inside. Ianto’s heart leapt at the sight of it, but it was printed, not handwritten. The message read,
A rose for every day
My lover is away
Ianto stood there for a while, leaning against the counter, and looked at the little card again. After a few moments he closed it, and put it safely away in his inside jacket pocket.
~*~
When the others had finally left, Tosh with her arm through Owen’s before they split up to go home and dress for their date, and Gwen eager to be off and see what surprises Rhys had planned, Ianto stopped behind to finish tidying up.
It stung a little that none of them had bothered to ask him if he had any plans for the evening – and they could hardly claim to be showing sympathy by staying clear of a touchy subject, considering the way they’d all been flaunting their relationships in front of him all day. The fact that he didn’t actually have any plans was quite irrelevant.
Finished with the tidying, and satisfied that the Hub was no longer looking like a disaster area (and that thought hurt, too), Ianto went to collect his rose and his car keys.
He found them both in the hands of Jack, who was sitting on the counter, twirling the rose idly.
For a second or two, he just stood and stared, and Jack looked up, smiling a little. Then he stood up and walked over to Ianto, pressing the rose into his hand and a kiss to his lips.
Stepping back, he said simply, “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
