I have vista, too, but it's on my first laptop ever so I probably just don't know how crap it is because I don't have a point of reference.
As for something to cheer you up: I could offer to share my custom made icon with you *points sideways* and a Bond!Ianto Wallpaper (it's perfectly centred so you could fit loads of oversized desktop icons around it)? Would be as good a reason as any to start my own photobucket account or some such where I can share pics... Aaanyyywaaayyyy, I keep my fingers crossed for your software wrestling and getting stuff back and just to make sure I'll be also keeping my thumbs pressed (which is the same thing, really, just a different cultural background)
