Getting Changed

“Why does this always happen to us?” Owen groaned, plucking unhappily at his spare t-shirt, which seemed to have shrunk slightly between him leaving it in the Hub and putting it on at that moment – which wasn’t entirely out of the question, considering the Torchwood lockers.

“Who else would it happen to?” Gwen pointed out, comfortable in her change of clothes and no longer complaining about the stench of the slime now she’d had a chance to shower and wash her hair. “We’re the only ones who turn up in response to calls like that. In the police, if we heard ‘giant purple slugs’ we’d be referring people to psychiatrists, not going out all guns blazing.”

Tosh looked up long enough to say, “We’re far from the only ones. There are the other Torchwoods, for starters, and UNIT of course. The Doctor if we’re lucky…”

“And that’s just this planet,” Jack said thoughtfully, putting an immediate halt to whatever comment Owen had been about to make. He sat back on the couch and gazed into the middle distance, idly propping his head in his hand, and putting his feet up on the coffee table, telling them, “You know, there’s a lot of places out there the Rift visits regularly. And besides that there’s plenty of planets with their own interdimensional tears. I mean, there’s this forest moon with a massive wormhole spewing stuff out in the middle of one of their sacred groves. They have teams watching it, like us. Cute little species. Like Ewoks. Don’t ever tell them that, though. If you think the military here is tetchy, you should see one of their squads if some of the paperwork goes missing.”

“Bollocks,” Owen said easily, and Jack grinned to himself.

“Nope. Mind you, it’s not all bad out there. There’s one place I ended up at where they’ve figured out how to use their space/time rip to travel anywhere they like. Got kinda stuck there once, after I left the Time Agency, but they put me back on track. To be fair I think they were a little eager to be rid of me. I nearly started a war, you see…”

“How did you manage that?” Gwen was asking, and Tosh glanced round as Ianto finally emerged from Jack’s quarters, clean and changed and looking far calmer than an hour before. He headed over to them.

“Well,” Jack explained to the others, “there was this Queen ruling one side and a President on the other, and I met them both while I was there. They were both unattached, and wanted me all for themselves. I tried to tell them they couldn’t tie me down – in the purely metaphorical sense, of course – but they wouldn’t even consider sharing…”

Ianto appropriated the space on the sofa next to Jack, and settled down without making a single comment about Jack’s feet on the coffee table. Jack’s arm casually found its way to his shoulders as he wrapped up his story and the others laughed dutifully.

“I think I’ll be off home,” Tosh said once he was done, gathering up her bag and jacket, and Gwen and Owen chimed in with agreement and claims of looking forward to a decent night’s sleep for once. They cleared out rapidly, leaving Ianto to put his feet up on the coffee table next to Jack’s, smiling.

“Can’t be tied down?”

“I said metaphorically,” Jack told him, grinning, then hugged him sideways and said, “Anyway. That was then. And that was… ooh, hundred and twenty years ago, from where I’m sitting.”

“Good,” Ianto said firmly, and held out his hand. Jack took it, and laced their fingers together.

“Nothing wrong with a bit of tying down every now and again,” Jack said, watching their hands. “After everything I’ve done it makes a nice change. And you know me.”

He glanced up at Ianto, and smiled. For once, it reached his eyes.

“I’ll try anything once.”
