All Together Now
Ianto loaded the last cup onto the tray and headed downstairs. He was humming softly to himself as he entered the main Hub, pausing to put Gwen’s mug on her desk. She glanced up, saying, “Thanks, Ianto,” with a distracted smile, and then turned back to her work, singing absent-mindedly, “On the good ship, Lollipop…”
Ianto shot a startled glance back over his shoulder when he heard that, but then shook his head and went to give Tosh her coffee.
“… to a candy shop,” Tosh murmured to herself, then broke off to take her mug from Ianto, saying, “Oh, thanks. Just what I needed.”
Ianto gave her a quick smile, then moved on, glancing into the autopsy room as he passed on the way to Jack’s office. Owen looked to be hard at work, doing some kind of experiment with two sets of caged mice, so Ianto left him to it for the moment.
Jack was doing his paperwork for once, humming quietly as he did so. He shot Ianto a brief smile, barely even focusing on him before his head went back down and he returned to his forms. Reading them upside down, Ianto wondered why each section seemed to require either, “lollipop” or “the mice are reacting in the same way” as the answer.
“Jack,” Ianto said quietly, and Jack looked up again, his humming turning into a questioning, “Mm?”
“Do you happen to have a song stuck in your head?” asked Ianto, and Jack frowned.
“Now you mention it, yeah,” he said.
Ianto raised both eyebrows, and sang softly, “On the good ship, Lollipop, it’s a sweet trip to a candy shop…”
Grinning, Jack said, “Yeah, that’s the one. Where’s it from?”
“Does it matter?” asked Ianto. “I’ve got it stuck in my head, too. So have Gwen and Tosh.”
“You don’t think something’s trying to communicate with us through song, do you?” Jack asked incredulously. “Has Owen got it too?”
“I haven’t asked him,” Ianto said, and Jack promptly got up and led the way to the autopsy room.
Owen looked up as they arrived at the top of the stairs, saying, “Jack. Was just about to come and get you. I reckon this plant’s making the mice telepathic. Look.”
He opened the top of one of the two boxes, which contained one mouse, and reached in. The mouse darted into a corner, cowering, as did the three in the other box, simultaneously.
“This one’s eaten some of the plant,” Owen explained, closing the box again. “The others seem to have started sharing its reactions. They think whatever it thinks.”
“Did it occur to you the plant’s perfume might have a similar effect?” asked Jack, and when Owen stared blankly at them, Ianto murmured, “On the good ship, Lollipop…”
Oh, shit, Jack and Ianto both thought.
“Owen, I’m guessing that was yours,” Jack said brightly.
