Suzie's Serpent
Suzie picked at her sandwich in irritation, dropping crumbs into the Bay. Beside her, also leaning on the railings at the end of the pier, Owen was concentrating on eating his own sandwich, occasionally glancing out over the Bay or smirking to himself as he thought of something particularly amusing.
For a long time neither of them spoke. Suzie watched her breadcrumbs sink into the water, frowning darkly at them, and then turned to Owen, opening her mouth to speak.
There was a scream nearby, and Suzie and Owen glanced over to their right, only to see someone pointing frantically back at them. They exchanged glances, and then looked down at the water again – straight into a gaping blue mouth, framed by jagged teeth, with a wispy blue beard and mane widening the circle.
Owen dropped his sandwich.
The beast swung its head to catch it, gulping it down and blinking massive eyes up at them, then stretching out spindly legs to grasp the surface of the pier and haul itself up.
Suzie and Owen backed away hurriedly as the creature slithered onto the pier, then wound its long body around the railings and paused to blink at them again. It opened its mouth to hiss, and then put its forelegs on the planks and starting creeping towards them, the rest of its body coiling through the gap in the railings to follow.
Owen hurriedly dug his comm out of his pocket and slapped it on, yelling, “Get your arses up here, we’re under attack!” while Suzie hurled her sandwich at the beast and then pulled out her gun when it paused to snap up her lunch.
“Some kind of Chinese dragon thing,” Owen was saying. “It’s got big teeth and it’s heading right for us, what the hell do you mean it might be friendly?”
Suzie very carefully took aim, and fired.
The serpent recoiled with a roar, eyes squeezed shut and pale blue blood running down its face. As it howled and ducked its head, Suzie shot it again, sending shards of teeth flying as the bullet hit it in the mouth. It screamed, opened its one remaining eye, and charged at them.
Three more bullets and it fell.
After a few moments of silence, Owen edged forward and poked the slack-jawed head with his foot. It lolled back, eye glassy, while the blood continued to trickle from its forehead and started to stain the planks.
Owen looked back at Suzie, and told her, “Tosh said it might have been friendly.”
“They’re never friendly,” Suzie said flatly.
With a sigh, Owen poked the body again and then raised his hand to his comm, telling the others, “No, it’s dead. We’re okay,” and then adding, with a heavy dose of sarcasm, “Thanks for the help.”
He turned away, then paused to survey the gathering crowds of bystanders, muttering amongst themselves, and returned his hand to his comm.
“By the way. Tell Ianto we’re gonna need a lot of retcon.”
