No Offence
“And finally,” Ianto said, reading from the screen of the translator, “please tell your Doctor we understand the derogatory nature of the term he has used to describe us, and if it is used once more in our presence, all negotiations are off and our two species will be in a permanent state of war.”
“Whoa, okay,” Jack told the aliens, raising both hands in a placating gesture and shooting a slightly frantic glance at Ianto. “We can deal with that, no problem. I’m genuinely sorry if we’ve caused any offence. It won’t happen again. If there’s anything we can do to make up for that, just name it.”
There was a short silence as the aliens’ translators worked all that over, then the leader of the pack looked thoughtful – as much as it was possible for him to, considering the stiffness of his round, teddy-bear face. He glanced at Ianto, and said something quickly in his language.
“As recompense,” Ianto read out dutifully, “we will accept the gift of your assistant – Jack, did you just sell me into slavery?”
Jack was already on his feet, towering over the indignant aliens and reaching out to grab Ianto’s arm, snapping, “No way in hell.”
The aliens didn’t need their translators to understand his tone and body language, and the five of them stood up on their chairs to gain a little bit more height, still only just coming up to Jack’s waist as they chattered and growled, waving their paws angrily.
“Great,” Jack sighed, pulling Ianto closer to him. “Now what?”
“You could always offer them Owen,” Ianto suggested brightly. “After all, he’s the one who called them Ewoks in the first place.”
Jack looked thoughtful for a moment, then winked at him.
“As long as I keep you, whatever works.”
