“Coffee?”
Jack looked up, and leant back in his chair, putting down his pen as he regarded Ianto.
“You do know that’s not why I hired you.”
“Of course,” Ianto agreed, but brought the mug forward anyway. Jack took it from him with a smile, fingers very deliberately lingering over Ianto’s for a few seconds longer.
“Do you want me to remind Owen as well?” he asked, then took a sip of the coffee while Ianto paused, eyebrows raised.
“Remind Owen?”
“That you do a lot more than just make the coffee,” Jack clarified. “I heard him earlier.”
“Oh,” Ianto said, smiling slightly. “Thank you, but no. Don’t worry about that. Owen and I have an arrangement these days.”
It was Jack’s turn to raise his eyebrows, earning him a stern look from Ianto.
“Not like that. We just have an understanding. Every time he insults me, I switch him to decaf.”
“Owen agreed to that?” Jack asked, startled.
Ianto smiled again, and told him, “Of course not. Like most of my understandings around here, I understand it, and I’m just waiting for the other party to catch up.”
Jack grinned.
“Do we have an understanding?”
“Oh, yes,” Ianto assured him, looking amused. “If you manage to get through all your work today…”
He trailed off, and Jack sat up straighter, saying, “What? If I do my work then what?”
Ianto just smiled, and left him to it.
After a moment, Jack settled back down and sipped thoughtfully at his coffee. Then he put the mug to one side (dutifully finding a coaster somewhere on his desk) and picked up the files Ianto had given him to look over. He flicked through to the last few pages, and found one loose piece of paper from an entirely different notepad.
If you want me to stay tonight, just ask, read Ianto’s handwriting.
P.S. Order Chinese. I’m sick of pizza.
Jack smiled, and picked up the phone.
